Printed Circuit Board Definition

A Printed Circuit Board provides a means of mechanically joining elements of an electronic circuit together in a conductive manner. It is comprised of multiple layers of different materials bonded together in various patterns to allow connections to be made between the different electronic components. At its most basic, those layers are made up of some inner insulating substrate, usually FR-4, a fiberglass impregnated with epoxy, with thin foils of copper bonded to either side of the insulation and etched into specific patterns.

Printed Circuit Board Examples

A PCB with layers of copper on either side of the inner substrate is called a “two layer board”. A stackup of insulation and copper layers can be bonded together to form “multilayer” boards with four, six or even more layers.
