Surface Finish Definition

Surface Finish, when discussing a PCB, relates to a post-etching treatment that is applied to any exposed copper on the circuit board. Copper tarnishes very easily, so a layer of secondary material is added to protect the copper for long term use and storage. The finish also acts to provide a solder compatible surface for assembly.

Typical surface finish treatments are HASL, ENIG and OSP, each providing different levels of protection at different manufacturing costs.
